Alan Goode conducts a 3-year training course for teachers of Iyengar Yoga devised around “practice based learning” (Tapas), which requires dedication to practice and self study (Svadhyaya). Course work is undertaken through Alan’s School Yoga Mandir in Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory. The aim of training is to provide an opportunity to deepen one’s yogic experience, and to develop a balance between professional teaching techniques and the hands-on skills gained through direct experience. All trainees must maintain membership of the BKS Iyengar Yoga Association as this is a requirement to sit certification and provides access to the most up to date information about certification guidelines.
Course AimOn successful completion of the course, participants will be able to
attain from Alan, as the Training Teacher, a referral to the BKS Iyengar
Yoga Association of Australia (BKSIYAA) Introductory 1 "Teacher in

The course includes a minimum 40 hours assisting/adjusting hours (BKSIYAA Intro 1 requirement) and an additional 60 hours assisting/adjusting (BKSIYAA Intro 2 requirement). The 7-day attendance periods are broken into two sections:
Practice RequirementsBoth Internal and External students are required to develop a home practice of 1½ - 2hrs x 6 days per week and to keep a log of their practice. During the course of training, the trainee must refrain from attending classes with other teachers. Study Load (not including practice requirements)Students will be provided an assignment and reading schedule that indicates study load per term. An average workload is 5 hours per week across a 10-week term. Time FrameCourse requirements cannot be met in less than 3 years. Information EveningsThere are two information evenings per year for those wanting additional information prior to applying for a place on the program. These evenings are held at the school in Canberra (Yoga Mandir) in the second half of each year. In 2008, the information evenings will be held at 7.30pm on Friday, 26 September and Friday, 7 November. ApplicationApplication is made via an expression of interest. These can be made in writing to Alan Goode no later than 1 November. Provide a letter of introduction and detail your yoga background including teachers and practice. On receipt, Alan Goode will reply and may make a recommendation or provide an application form.
